How to Reduce Morning Anxiety
Do you feel a bit anxious in the morning? If you do, you’re not alone. Many people experience this. This is a normal and very common experience. In this blog, I have shared some ways to reduce morning anxiety.
Definition of morning anxiety :
Morning anxiety is not a medical term. It refers to waking up with feelings of worry and excessive stress.
Physical symptoms may look like:
- Feeling weak and fatigued
- Mental confusion and fear
- Nervousness or a feeling of impending doom
- Restlessness
- Upset stomach
- Racing heart
- Shortness of breath
Why does it happen?
Morning anxiety can be caused by many factors that may also contribute to an anxiety disorder. Since morning anxiety is a reaction to excess stress and worries, there are several potential causes that may contribute to your symptoms.
- Stress at home, work or school
- Over consume
- Physical health issues
- CAR(cortisol awakening response) is at its highest in the 1st hour of waking
Tips to reduce morning anxiety
Here are some tips to reduce morning anxiety .
Get more sleep
Getting good sleep is important for your mental wellbeing throughout the day but especially in the morning.
Avoid snoozing your alarm
It is too important to avoid snoozing your alarm. Hitting the snooze button is also not the best way for our minds to begin the day. We add to our stress by starting our morning in a fight with our alarms, where we eventually concede defeat. Get up when your alarm goes off.
Meditate
One of the best hobbies to reduce your anxiety and calm your mind is meditation.
Simple breathing exercises can help your body and train your mind to focus on the present. Practice deep breathing in the morning.
Eat healthy breakfast
Low blood sugar in the morning can cause negative feelings and symptoms that affect your mind and body. As your body and physical health are directly related to your mental health and your anxiety, you have to eat healthy foods especially at breakfast.
Get some exercise
Physical activity is one of the best ways to lift your mood in the morning.
- Physical activity increases endorphins.
- Exercise elevates mood.
Change your lifestyle
Many lifestyle changes can help you manage morning anxiety, including :
- Getting enough sleep
- Eating healthy diets
- Reducing stress at work, home and school

Writing down your thoughts and feelings in a journal can be an effective way to cope with worry, self-doubt, and negativity. It offers a way to examine sources of stress, as well as express deeper thoughts. Try to set a timer for 10–15 minutes.
