Definition of Toxic Positivity

Toxic positivity is an obsession with positive thinking. It is the belief that people should put a positive spin on all experiences, even those that are profoundly tragic.[1]

It is maintaining that one should have positive & only positive emotions and thoughts all the time, despite hardship and difficulties. Sometimes we try to cover up feelings then it becomes toxic. According to some psychological studies, hiding or denying feelings lead to more stress on the body. We can’t deny that humans are flawed. We get jealous, angry and greedy. When we force ourselves to be positive , we may fall victim to toxic positivity or fake positivity.

Forms of Toxic Positivity :

Here I have mentioned some forms of Toxic positivity :

“Being sad won’t help you.”

“Other people have it worse.”

“We only welcome positive vibes.”

“You just have to get over it.”

“You’ll feel better when you smile.”

“Don’t worry, be happy!”

“It could be worse!”

  • Hiding your true feelings.
  • Dismissing emotions.
  • Pretending “Everything is ok”.
  • Shaming others or yourself for experiences or feelings
  • Feeling guilty for what you’re feeling .
  • Comparing others or comparing yourself with others.
  • Ignoring your problems.
  • Giving fake sympathy to the others.

Try to avoid toxic positivity. Learn to spread helpful positivity . Otherwise you have to face many problems in future for this kind of positivity.
